Diefenderfer, Charles

Charles Diefenderfer was born August 30,1821 in Lehigh County, PA and died November 17, 1900 in West Salem Twp. He is buried in Reichart Cemetery, Mercer County, PA. His parents were Jacob and Maria (Baer) Diefenderfer who were natives of Lehigh County, PA. In the spring of 1836, Charles and his parents crossed the mountains to Mercer County and settled on Big Ran in West Salem Twp. They brought with them five children: Mary, Henry, Reuben, Charles and Elvina. They belonged to the Lutheran Church in Lehigh and Mercer Counties. Charles grew up on the old homestead which he subsequently inherited. He was a farmer and carpenter.
On January 4, 1846 he married Catherine Kamerer, daughter of Jacob and Margaret Kamerer, pioneers to Hempfield Twp., Mercer County. Catherine was born on February 22, 1826 and they had 9 children: William, Harriet, Levi, Louisa, Jacob, George, Charles, Julia and Catharine.
