ARTHUR W. PHILLIPS. - - Occupying a place of prominence and influence among the prosperous and progressive citizens of South Sharon is Arthur W. Phillips, a well-known contractor, and the president of the board of council of the borough. He was born on a farm in Crawford county, Pennsylvania, October 6, 1872, a son of Palmer and Frances (Henry) Phillips, who were both natives of the Keystone state.

Reared on the parental homestead, Arthur W. Phillips gleaned his first knowledge in the district school, working with his father at the carpenter trade as he grew to manhood. He attended the Allegheny College, at Meadville, for three years. After beginning life on his own account, he established himself in the hardware and tinning business, in the fall of 1904 locating in South Sharon, where he was successfully employed as a tinner and hardware merchant for two years, selling out at an advantage in the fall of 1906. Soon after this he went into business again as building contractor, his early training peculiarly fitting him for this line of work. A man of excellent business capacity, sound in his judgments, and wise in his investments, Mr. Phillips has accumulated considerable wealth, owning a farm in Crawford county, Pennsylvania, and valuable property in South Sharon.

On June 25, 1896, Mr. Phillips married Miss Elizabeth E. Cummings, of Geneva, Crawford county. Mrs. Phillips is a woman of culture, a graduate from Allegheny College, class of '93. To this union were born four children: Lucile, Evelyn, Earl and Mildred. In his political relations Mr. Phillips is a straightforward Republican, and in 1905 was elected to the South Sharon Borough Council, of which he is now the president. He is active in religious circles, having been largely interested in the building up of the Methodist Church of South Sharon, of which he is a leading member, being one of its trustees, and a steward.
