Joseph James Battyanyi Sr.
Joseph J. Battyanyi Sr. of Transfer, passed away peacefully at 10:00 am Friday (11-29-13) in Hospitality Care Center, Hermitage. He was 97.
Joe was born to Sigmond and Ethel Puskai Battyanyi on Jan. 2 1916, in Sharon, Pa.
He married his wife Elizabeth Klein on Aug. 6th 1938 and celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary together this year.
Joe was a veteran of the US Army and honorably discharged.
In his early years he owned and operated Joe’s Tire and Recapping business in Sharon, PA. He was later employed by and retired from the former Westinghouse Corp. in Sharon.
Joe was a devoted father and grandfather and always found time for his family and friends. Company was always welcome in his home. He was active in scouting and had coached Little League, and Senior League Baseball teams in the Transfer area.
He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. His favorite pastimes were bowling, listening to music, collecting coins, watching sports, playing his guitar, gardening and working in his garage.
Joe is survived by a son, Joseph Battyanyi Jr. and his wife Barbara, Transfer; a daughter, Carol Zellefrow, Sharon; four grandchildren, William Hackett, Gilbert, SC.; Lenny Derr, Sharon; Joseph Battyanyi III and his wife Susan, Midway, Ga.; Kenneth Battyanyi and his wife Chris, Carnegie, Pa.; four great-grandchildren, Joseph Battyanyi IV, Nicholas Battyanyi, Michelle Battyanyi, and Jessica Battyanyi; two sisters Elizabeth Krauss; and Margaret Gasparich.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Elizabeth; his sisters, Mary Gargano; Julia Kaye; Ann Blair Pollack; Rose Krauss.; and 3 brothers Steve Battyanyi; Louis Battyanyi; and James Battyanyi
