Obituary in the Mercer Dispatch, Friday, Feb. 14, 1930
Samuel Rankin Mason,
Mercer friends were shocked Monday when word arrived of the sudden death of Samuel Rankin Mason of Pasadena. Calif., which occured that morning at the home of his brother, Dr. W.C. Mason, in Erie. Mr. Mason had not been in good health the past year and had spent much of the summer with his sisters here. Returning to California in the fall, he remained but a short time and then joined his brother in Erie where his death followed a few hours' illness. Mr. Mason was 66 years of age. The son of the late Samuel Rankin Mason and Sarah Jane Mason of Mercer, he was born here and spent his boyhood. He was educated at the Mercer schols, Allegheny college, Meadville and at Duff's Business college, Pittsburgh. After spending several years in Pittsburgh where he was trust officer in the Union Trust, he went to California and made his home in Pasadena where he was intrested in real estate. Mr. Mason was unmarried. While in Pittsburgh he united with the First Presbyterian Church of Mercer. He made frequent visits to his home town where he made and retained many friends.
Mr. Mason is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary M. Bowser and Miss Jennie Mason of Mercer, by one brother, Dr. W.C. Mason of Erie and by a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at his boyhood home in North Pitt street, now the home of his sister Miss Jennie Mason. They were conducted by Dr. John S. Duncan. Burial was in the Mercer cemetery.
