Sharon Herald, 3 January 1961: Greenville: H. Clark Bates, 83, died Monday at Greenville Hospital after an illness of 3 days. Born in Jamestown on 7 March 1877, son of Jacob and Caroline Burch Bates. On 20 June 1906 he married Amy Louise Hatton who survives. Bates lives his entire lifetime in the Jamestown-Greenville area and was affiliated with Greenville First Methodist Church. He was a foreman in the paint department of Bessemer & Lake Erie RR. He served for a number of years as a school director in the Greenville School District & was a treasurer of the Mutual Benefit Assn of Bessemer & Lake Erie RR. He was a life member of the Greenville Elks Lodge. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Marian (Mrs. Charles Crossland) - Greenville; and a grandson, Charles Crossland, Jr. - Greenville. A sister, Mrs. Blaine Hunter, preceded him in death. Interment in Park Lawn Cemetery.
