Evans-McCarthy family of Sharon

Submitted by CRG47 on Sat, 10/16/2010 - 10:16

I am researching the Richards family of Tredegar in South Wales.

Elizabeth Jane Richards (born in Tredegar in 1859) married Evan Bowen Evans (born in Radnorshire, Wales, in 1856) at Bedwellty Parish Church on 11 February 1878. Two children were born to the couple (Daniel in 1879 and Mary Elizabeth in 1880, named for their grandparents) before the family emigrated to Pennsylvania around 1883. A further four children were born following their arrival in Sharon: Evan George in 1883, Sarah Catherine in 1887, Eunice A. in 1889 and Richard Andrew in 1892. Within a few days of Richard's birth, his mother died, aged just 33.

Where was Elizabeth Jane buried and is there a headstone?

Almost all of the 1890 United States Federal Census was destroyed by fire in 1921, hence there is no record of the work Evan Evans undertook while in Sharon. He could have been a coal miner, a steelworker or plied his old trade as a sawyer. Or he could have been a farmer, which is how he is enumerated in the 1900 census while living in Hickory, a few miles east of Sharon.

Evans married Marcia (correct given name? what is her surname at marrage?) within twelve months of the death of his former wife in 1892. Of Welsh descent though born in Pennsylvania, Marcia was thirteen years older than her husband; she either died or was divorced shortly after the millenium because at the 1910 census, Evans is enumerated as husband of six years to Mary.

Evans is absent from the 1930 census - perhaps he died in the 1920s. I cannot find a record of either his death or his burial.

Evans' eldest daughter, Mary Elizabeth (b.1880 in Wales), married John Patrick McCarthy (b.1876 in Pennsylvania) around 1902/03. Three children followed: Mary (b.1904), Katherine (1906) and John Patrick Jnr (1913). The family cannot be traced in the 1910 census but are enumerated in both 1920 and 1930 living in Sharon where John worked as a heater (what is this?) in a steel mill.

Both Mary and John are buried in Saint Mary Cemetery in Hermitage.

I am interested in tracing the descendants of Mary and John McCarthy and of the other children of Evan and Elizabeth (although it's possible both Sarah Catherine and Richard Andrew died childless in 1919). I think that Evan George Evans died in 1975 in Jackson Center, Mercer County, PA.

Lastly, there is a family rumour that Elizabeth Jane Richards' older brother, Daniel (b. 1856 in Tredegar, Wales) followed his sister to America (possibly in 1879) and lived in Mercer County for a time. Does this ring any bells with anyone?

Evan Bowen Evans

I am the granddaughter of Daniel Thomas Evans and have been researching my family for about ten years. Sarah Catherine died of the Spanish Flu in Jan 1919. She was buried in Morefield Cemetery in Sharon, PA. She had one son, Evan Boynton Jones, who died in 1999 and is also buried in Morefield. Richard Andrew died in 1919 too. He had two children. I have a lot more information about Evan and Elizabeth's children which I would be happy to share. My email address is ElaineEB@msn.com

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Elizabeth Jane Richards

Elizabeth Jane (Richards) Evans died January 8, 1892. She is buried in Morefield Cemetery in the Evans plot. There is no headstone. Although 12 people are buried there, there are only 2 markers. One is for Evan George Evans (1883-1975) and his wife, Anna. The other is for Sarah, wife of Boynton Jones (1887-1919.) This is our Sadie. There is a base with no marker which I expect marks the graves of Evan Bowen Evans and his wives. He was married a second time to Jane Reed on June 11, 1892. She was a recent widow. That first name of "Marcia" on 1900 Census is a mystery to me. I have the marriage application record. Jane died on Jan 8, 1905. On Nov 30, 1905 he married Mary Alice Thompson. This is the wife on the 1910 Census.
Sadie had one son, Evan Boynton Jones. He died on Nov 8, 1999 and is also buried in Morefield, but not in the family plot.
Richard Andrew Evans was adopted and had a son and a daughter. He died in 1919 shortly after Sadie died.
I have a great deal of other info about all the Evans family which I will be happy to share with you. My email address is ElaineEB@msn.com

Hoping to hear from you.
